WORDS & INTERVIEW BY MICHAEL ZARATHUS-COOK
“If a concert was a dinner party,” reads the tagline for Tafelmusik’s forthcoming Passions Revealed concert, “this one would have a big long table, lots of food, wonderful conversation, and just the right amount of chaos.” Balancing the discourse between the rational and the chaotic seems to be one of the underlying motifs throughout Tafelmusik’s 45th anniversary season, replete with programs of contrasting ingredients such as Bohemian Rhapsody: Haydn & Benda and Transformations: Bach & Rameau. Passions Revealed ─ onstage February 23–25 at Jeanne Lamon Hall ─ is emblematic of this programmatic juxtaposition of contrasting elements.
Curated and directed by Canadian violinist Aisslinn Nosky, this program is a snapshot of the creative energy that animated late 17th Century and early 18th century Baroque music, featuring seven leading composers of the era. It is also a testament to Tafelmusik’s sizable influence on the global Early Music scene over the last 45 years. Nosky, who was born the same year that Tafelmusik was created, spent the earlier part of her career in the thick of the ensemble and has since gone on to esteemed positions within leading Baroque ensembles in North America. With a deep knowledge of Tafelmusik’s identity and mission, and even deeper understanding of presenting early music for a modern audience, Nosky’s upcoming return to Toronto promises to be a must see event. She joins CANNOPY to speak to me about the inspirations behind this concert, balancing her various creative outlets, Tafelmusik’s staying power in the Early Music community—and finding the “right amount of chaos” in a concert.
